39.17

晉建元寺。建康太清里寺基本。宋北第元徽二年宮人陳太妃造寺塔。舍利靈應相仍。每夕放光。寺大殿後畫迦毘羅王及毘沙門天王二像。若有僧侶失儀童豎褻慢者。無不影響表異使其恭肅。若使虔誠懺禮標心懇切者。必空中有彈指聲。或循繞翼衛。其間有請福祈願者。莫不剋諧。

Jianyuan Temple of the Jin: its site was Taiqingli in Jiankang. In the second year of the Yuanhui era of the Song, Lady Chen of the northern palace built a temple and stūpa. Relics and spiritual responses followed one after another, emitting light every evening. Behind the temple's main hall were painted images of the two figures, King Kapila and Heavenly King Vaiśravaṇa. If there were monks who lost their dignified deportment or servant boys who behaved disrespectfully, signs and anomalies appeared without fail to make them reverent and solemn. If one was devoutly repentant, paid homage, and established an earnest mind, there would certainly be the sound of snapping fingers in the air, or divine beings circumambulating and guarding. If anyone prayed for blessings or made vows there, they were invariably fulfilled.
