Before the world had yet been formed, the two polarities were still obscure; after sentient beings stored grain, the three luminaries then shone forth. They moved the deep compassion of Ratnamati and opened the profound contemplation of Śrī. Steering the solar essence, it casts radiant gleams; clarifying the lunar soul, it sends forth bright rays. Speeding along the wind-relays, they revolve; matching the armillary sphere, they accord with proper measure. They mark cold and heat across the three seasons; they bind morning and evening across the four continents. Although their figures are calculated in the heavens above, they also manifest portents for the earth below. When virtue accords with the primal good, the chariot drives along the yellow path; when righteousness diverges like fish and water, the mirror turns along the dark road. Retracing three mansions, they reward virtuous words and present good fortune; appearing at times in five layers, they display evil omens and awe treachery. Looking up, we examine the dark patterns; bending down, we admonish and encourage ourselves. The function of the sun and moon is vast indeed!
