The Shi tuidu zai says: "On the third day the moon forms its crescent; on the eighth day it forms its light. The body of the toad is completed, and its hare's cleft nose begins to sprout." (Song Jun's commentary says: "The cleft-nosed one is the hare.") The Chunqiu yan Kong tu says: "The toad is the essence of the moon." The Chunqiu yuanming bao says: "The essence of yin becomes the moon. The sun travels thirteen degrees; [the moon] constantly bends in submission and receives [it] (receiving the essence of yang). Receiving the bright essence within, its metal and water reflect inward." The Hetu shikai says: "The dust of the Yellow Springs rises to become blue-green clouds; the dust of the Red Springs rises to become red clouds; the dust of the White Springs rises to become white clouds; the dust of the Dark Springs rises to become dark clouds." (Also recorded in the Huainanzi.) The Hetu guodi xiang says: "Mount Kunlun produces five-coloured clouds and vapours."
