40.11

如菩薩處胎經云。時八國王共諍舍利。有一大臣名優波吉。諫八國王。何為興兵共相征伐。爾時帝釋即現為人。語王言。我等諸天亦當有分。若共諍力則有勝負。幸可見與勿足為難。爾時阿耨達龍王。文隣龍王。伊那鉢龍王。語八王言。我等亦應有分。若不見與力足相伏。時臣優波吉告言。諸君並止。舍利宜共分之。何須見諍。即分為三分。一分與諸天。一分與龍王。一分與八王。分甕受一石餘。此臣以蜜塗甕裏。以甕量分。諸天得舍利還於天上。即起七寶塔。龍得舍利還於宮中。起七寶塔。臣優波吉著甕舍利。并甕亦起寶塔。灰及土量得四十九斛。亦起四十九寶塔。闍維處亦起寶塔。高三十九仞（一仞七尺）。

As the Pusa chutai jing says: At that time, the kings of the eight countries disputed over the śarīra. There was a minister named Upakāra (Youboji) who admonished the kings of the eight countries: “Why raise troops to conquer one another?” At that time, Śakra, king of the devas, manifested as a human and said to the kings: “We devas should also have a share. If we compete in strength, there will be victory and defeat. Fortunately, you can give [a share] to us, so there is no need to make difficulties.” At that time, the dragon king Anavatapta, the dragon king Mucilinda, and the dragon king Elāpattra said to the eight kings: “We too should have a share. If you do not give [a share] to us, our power is sufficient to subdue you.” Then the minister Upakāra said: “All of you, cease! The śarīra ought to be divided together; what need is there to dispute over them?” He immediately divided them into three shares: one share was given to the devas, one share to the dragon kings, and one share to the eight kings. The dividing urn held more than one dan. This minister smeared the inside of the urn with honey and used the urn to measure the shares. Having obtained their śarīra, the devas returned to heaven and immediately erected seven-jewelled stupas. Having obtained their śarīra, the dragons returned to their palaces and erected seven-jewelled stupas. For the śarīra sticking to the urn, together with the urn itself, the minister Upakāra also erected a jewelled stupa. The ashes and soil measured forty-nine hu, and forty-nine jewelled stupas were also erected. At the site of the cremation (jhāpita), a jewelled stupa was also erected, thirty-nine ren in height (one ren being seven chi).
