The full account is as expounded below in the chapter 'Refuting Heterodoxy'. In the city of Luoyang during the reign of Emperor Ming of the Wei, there were originally three temples, one of which was to the west of the palace. Whenever śarīra were suspended on the banner-mast, they could be plainly seen within the palace. The emperor was troubled by this and was about to demolish and destroy it. At that time, a foreign śramaṇa was residing in the temple; he presented a golden platter filled with water, which held the śarīra. Five-coloured radiant light soared in flames without ceasing. The emperor saw this and sighed, saying, "Were it not for a divine effect, how could it be like this?" Thereupon, to the east of the road, he built a hundred-bay surrounding gallery, naming it the Official Pagoda Vihāra.
