The Hero of the World with the Ten Powers was in the dense forest; / The Buddha's bowl and the saṃgha's bowls sat exposed in the open. / A wild beast that had planted virtue possessed sentient wisdom; / Seeing fine, ripe honey free of bees, / It went straight forward to take the World-Honoured One's bowl. / The bhikṣus wished to stop it, but the Buddha would not permit it. / Having obtained the bowl, it filled it with honey and came to offer it to the Buddha; / The Tathāgata in tender pity accepted it for its sake. / Heart delighted and joyful, it danced as it backed away; / Its foot slipped, it fell down the bank, and its life came to an end. / It was immediately reborn above in the Thirty-Three Heavens; / Later descending to be reborn [as a human], it went forth from household life and became an arhat.
