Now, the method of offering gatherings takes being without restriction as its foundation. Having neither prejudice nor preference alone accords with the heart of dāna. Therefore, implicitly harboring [such intentions] dispels characteristic forms, making the boundary of emptiness the ultimate limit; according with the time and following conditions, it is commensurate with the dharmadhātu. Since the cause is inexhaustible, the fruit is likewise unending. Moreover, when worldly people are frugal and their wealth poor, they restrict the goods given in dāna. Since the goods are restricted, their minds are likewise attached: either calculating individuals to prepare the offerings, or selecting virtue before inviting. Merit with limits has not been renounced, and boundless retribution has not been attained. Those who foolishly give the Dharma: though their goods be comprehensive, their giving is sparse. Those who skillfully and expediently bestow: cause goods to be sparse, yet their giving is comprehensive. For this reason, when the foreign lands hold vegetarian feasts, they are mostly widespread and unrestricted, directing their minds to the ten directions to encompass the dharmadhātu.
