At that time, hearing their daughter speak the verse, the parents were overjoyed. They immediately came forward, embraced her, nursed and raised her, and named her Śraddhā (Shan'ai). When the girl saw her mother's joy, she joined her palms and said to her mother: "Please invite the Buddha and the saṅgha of bhikṣus for me." [The mother] immediately invited them, and food and drink of a hundred flavours were completely provided. Thereupon, before the Buddha, she thirsted to hear the Dharma. The Buddha immediately preached it for her, and she attained [the fruit of] srotāpanna. Later, she sought to renounce the household life. The Buddha said: "Welcome, bhikṣuṇī!" Her hair fell away of itself, kāṣāya robes appeared on her body, and she became a bhikṣuṇī. Diligently practicing, she attained the fruit of arhatship, revered and venerated by gods and humans. At that time, the World-Honoured One, leading one thousand two hundred and fifty bhikṣus, journeyed to another realm and arrived in a wilderness. The mealtime having arrived, he said to the bhikṣuṇī Shan'ai: "You may now provide food and drink to make an offering to the Buddha and the saṅgha." She immediately took the Buddha's bowl and threw it into the sky; food and drink of a hundred flavours naturally filled it to overflowing. In this manner, she successively took the bowls of the one thousand two hundred and fifty bhikṣus, and the food likewise filled them all, making everyone completely satisfied. Seeing this, Ānanda exclaimed that it was unprecedented, and asked the Buddha to explain its past causal conditions. The Buddha told Ānanda: "In this Bhadrakalpa, there was a Buddha who appeared in the world named Kāśyapa. Putting on his robes and holding his bowl, he led the bhikṣus into a city to beg for food. They came successively to the house of a great elder, who had prepared various delicacies wishing to entertain guests. While the guests had not yet arrived, a maidservant saw the Buddha and the saṅgha standing outside the gate begging for food. Without informing her master, she took the food and drink and gave it all as an offering to the Buddha and the saṅgha. Later, when the guests arrived and were seated, the master ordered the maid, saying: 'Bring forth the prepared food.' The maid replied to her master: 'Just now the Buddha and the saṅgha were standing outside the gate begging for food. I took this food and gave it all away in dāna.' Having heard this, the master was immediately filled with joy. He said to the maid: 'Today we have encountered this puṇyakṣetra; that you were able to take this food and give it away is delightful beyond words. I now set you free, to pursue whatever you desire.' The maid replied to her master: 'If you set me free, please permit me to enter the path.' He immediately granted permission, and she became a bhikṣuṇī. For ten thousand years she was diligent without lapse. When her life ended, she did not fall into the evil destinies. Among gods and humans, food and drink of a hundred flavours would arrive as soon as she thought of them. Now she has encountered me, renounced the household life, and attained the path." Having heard this, the bhikṣus rejoiced and practiced accordingly.
