The Jin bhikṣuṇī Zhu Daorong was of unknown origin. She resided at Wujiang Temple. Her observance of precepts was refined and strict, and she frequently had manifest responses. During the reign of Emperor Ming of Jin, she was deeply revered and served. Testing her attainment by spreading flowers beneath her mat, they indeed did not wither. At that time, Emperor Jianwen practiced the Way of Clear Water; the master he venerated was the one known in the capital as Wang Puyang. Inside his residence was a Daoist shrine. Daorong frequently tried to convert him, but the emperor did not heed her. Thereafter, whenever the emperor entered the Daoist hall, he constantly saw divine beings in the form of śramaṇas filling the room. The emperor suspected it was Daorong's doing, and taking her as his master, he subsequently revered the True Dharma. That the Jin court conspicuously honored Buddhism was through the efforts of this nun. At that time, people revered her marvels and called her a sage. Xinlin Temple was built by the emperor for Daorong. In the early Xiaowu era, she suddenly vanished without a trace, her whereabouts unknown. They thereupon buried her robes and bowl; hence there is a tumulus beside the temple.
