The śramaṇa Zhu Fajin was the head of Kaidu Monastery. He was intelligent, discerning, and knowledgeable, able to understand the languages of distinct foreign regions. When turmoil was about to break out in the capitals of Chang'an and Luoyang, he wished to dwell in the mountains and marshes. The multitude pleaded with him to remain, but Fajin refused to listen to anyone. Holding a great assembly, he burned incense and bade farewell to the community. Just as he was about to distribute the incense, a monk suddenly arrived and took the seat of honor. His garments were covered in dust and grime, and his face was jaundiced and swollen. Fajin regarded him as strange and base, and pulled him down to a lower seat, but the monk repeatedly went back to the top. When Fajin pulled him away a third time, the monk vanished from sight. After the assembly was settled and food was just being served, a sudden violent wind stirred up sand, and the trays and tables overturned. Fajin repented and reproached himself, whereupon it ceased. He did not enter the mountains; people commented that because the world was about to fall into great turmoil, it was inappropriate for Fajin to enter the mountains, and furthermore, because the monastics and laity were earnestly and ardently beseeching him to stay, this miraculous anomaly was shown to halt his intention of departing.
