43.30

爾時彼兇惡主執彼比丘著鐵鑊油中。足與薪火火終不然。假使然者或復不熱。兇主見火不然。打拍使者而自然火。火即猛盛。久久見開鐵鑊蓋見彼比丘。鐵鑊中蓮華上坐。生希有心即啟國王。王即便嚴駕將無量眾來看比丘時。彼比丘調伏時至。即身昇虛空猶如雁王。示種種變化。如偈所說。

At that time, that cruel warden seized that bhikṣu and placed him in the oil of an iron caldron. He piled up fuel and set fire, yet the fire would not burn at all; even when it burned, it would not become hot. Seeing that the fire would not ignite, the cruel warden beat his servants, and then the fire ignited of itself, blazing fiercely. After a long time, on opening the lid of the iron caldron, he saw that bhikṣu sitting on a lotus blossom within the iron caldron. Conceiving a sense of wonder, he immediately reported it to the king. The king then prepared his carriage and led an immeasurable multitude to come and see the bhikṣu. At that time, the moment to tame [the king] had arrived for that bhikṣu; he ascended into the open sky like the king of wild geese, displaying various miraculous transformations, as told in the verse:
