又雜阿含經云。阿育王言。我今先當供養所覺菩提之樹。然後香美飲食施設於僧。勅諸臣唱令國界。王今捨十萬兩金布施眾僧。千甕香湯溉灌菩提樹。集諸五眾。時王子名曰拘那羅。在左右邊舉二指而不言說。意欲二倍供養。大眾見之皆盡發笑。王亦發笑而語言。嗚呼王子乃有增益功德供養。王復言。我復以三十萬兩金供養眾僧。復加千甕香湯洗浴菩提樹。時王子復舉四指。意在四倍。時王瞋恚語諸臣曰。誰教王子作是事與我興競。臣啟王言。誰敢與王興競然王子聰慧利根增益功德。故作是事耳。時王右顧視王子。白上座耶舍曰。除我庫藏之物。餘一切物閻浮提夫人婇女諸臣眷屬及我拘那羅子。皆悉布施賢聖眾僧。唱令國界集諸比丘眾。而說偈言。

Furthermore, the Saṃyuktāgama states: King Aśoka said, "I should now first make offerings to the Bodhi tree of awakening, and afterwards provide fragrant and delicious food and drink to the Saṃgha." He ordered his ministers to proclaim throughout the borders of the realm: "The king now gives away one hundred thousand ounces of gold as an offering to the Saṃgha, and pours one thousand urns of fragrant water to bathe the Bodhi tree, assembling the fivefold assembly." At that time, the prince named Kuṇāla was beside him; he raised two fingers without speaking, intending to double the offerings. When the great assembly saw this, they all laughed, and the king also laughed, saying to him, "Oh! The prince wishes to multiply the merit of offerings!" The king spoke again: "I shall further offer three hundred thousand ounces of gold to the Saṃgha, and add another thousand urns of fragrant water to wash the Bodhi tree." At that time, the prince raised four fingers again, intending to quadruple it. Then the king grew angry and said to his ministers, "Who taught the prince to do this and compete with me?" The ministers addressed the king, saying, "Who would dare to compete with the king? However, the prince is intelligent and of sharp faculties, seeking to multiply merit, and therefore did this." Then the king looked to his right at the prince and addressed the elder Yaśas, saying, "Except for the goods in my treasuries, all other things—Jambudvīpa, the queen, the court ladies, the ministers, the retinue, and my son Kuṇāla—are all given away to the noble Saṃgha." He proclaimed throughout the realm to gather the assembly of bhikṣus, and spoke a verse, saying:
