Furthermore, the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra states: Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain is called here Vulture Peak Mountain. Question: Why is it called Vulture Peak Mountain? Answer: The peak of this mountain resembles a vulture. Because the people of Rājagṛha saw that it resembled a vulture, they passed on the name Vulture Peak Mountain; hence it was named Vulture Peak Mountain. Moreover, in the śīvavana south of Rājagṛha there were many dead corpses; vultures constantly came to feed on them and then returned to rest on the mountain peak. The people of the time thereupon called it Vulture Peak Mountain. This mountain is the highest and largest among the five mountains, possessing many fine groves and waters, and is an abode of sages.
