As the New Vibhāṣā-śāstra says: Question: Among the disciples, Mahākāśyapa had few desires, was easily satisfied, and was complete in dhūta practices (formerly translated as touduo); Bakkula had few illnesses, was frugal, and was complete in the practice of pure precepts. What is the difference between these two? Answer: Whatever food and drink Venerable Mahākāśyapa received, whether coarse or fine, he ate in succession without discrimination, just like a fine horse eating whatever it obtains. Venerable Bakkula, with whatever food and drink he received, whether coarse or fine, set aside the fine and ate the coarse. As the sūtra says: There are four noble lineages: first, the noble lineage of being content with whatever food is received; second, the noble lineage of being content with whatever robes are received; third, the noble lineage of being content with whatever bedding is received; fourth, the noble lineage of delighting in abandoning and delighting in cultivation regarding existence and non-existence.
