Du Zhikai, a man of Lihu in Caozhou during the Tang, was fond of Buddhist texts from his youth and did not take office. He did not marry, wore monastic robes, and lived in seclusion on Mount Tai, making recitation his regular practice. In the twenty-first year of the Zhenguan era, he fell ill in the mountains and was near death. Covering his body with a kāṣāya, he was dazed as if in a dream, and saw an old woman and dozens of beautiful women repeatedly coming to disturb him. Zhikai sat upright without moving. The crowd of women gradually pressed close to rebuke him, all saying: "Let us carry him and throw him into the northern ravine!" They then all came forward at once to seize him. Among them, one grabbed hold of the kāṣāya, whereupon they chanted the Buddha's name in unison. Stepping back, they repented and requested him to make an image of Amitābha Buddha and recite the name of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara more than thirty times for them. Shortly after, he felt his body break into a heavy sweat, and he was immediately healed. (Extracted from the Mingbao shiyi lu).
