Evil words and curses, / Arrogance and despising others: / When such deeds are aroused, / Hostility and resentment arise from them. / Modest words and submissive phrases, / Showing reverence toward others, / Renouncing malice and enduring evil: / Hostility and resentment vanish of themselves. / When a man is born, / An axe is within his mouth; / That which cuts down his body / Arises from his evil speech. / Contending for slight gain, / Is like losing wealth in gambling; / From this contention arises, / Causing the mind to turn toward evil. / Mind is the root of phenomena; / Mind is supreme, mind is the master. / If within the heart one conceives evil, / Suffering and guilt pursue one naturally. / Mind is the root of phenomena; / Mind is supreme, mind is the master. / If within the heart one conceives good, / Merit and joy follow one naturally. / Following the actions of a confused mind, / Bound by foolishness, one enters darkness; / Conceited and lawless, / How could one understand good words? / Following the actions of an upright mind, / One becomes enlightened, clear, and bright; / Free from jealousy, / One is swift in comprehending good words. / Being resentful toward enemies, / Never brings an end to enmity; / Free of resentment, it ends of itself: / This path can be venerated. / Not fond of blaming others, / Devote yourself to examining your own conduct; / If there be one who knows this, / Evils are extinguished forever without afflictions.
