Under the Tang, the prefect of Cizhou, Wang Qianshi of Taiyuan, was by nature kind and filial, and was renowned for his composure and prudence. He was especially versed in the Buddhist scriptures and practiced with faithful resolve. In the sixth year of Zhenguan, he was in mourning for his father, observing the rites beyond measure: eating one meal a day, maintaining a perpetual fast, becoming emaciated until his bones stood out like firewood. He built a hut to the left of the grave and carried earth to form the burial mound. At night he constantly recited Buddhist sutras, not sleeping even in the dead of night. Each time the sound of a chiming stone was heard, it was extraordinarily clear and resonant, and a strange fragrance spread over several li. Monastics and laity who heard it were all astonished (this one verification is taken from the Mingbao shiyi).
