49.65

如雜寶藏經云。昔有一婦。稟性佷悷不順禮度。每所云為常與姑反。後作方計教其夫主自殺其母。其夫愚癡。即用婦語。便將其母至曠野中。結縛手足將欲加害。罪逆之甚感徹上天。雲霧四合為下霹靂霹殺其兒。母即還家。其婦開門謂是夫主。問言。殺未。姑答已殺。至於明日方知夫死。不孝之罪現報如是。後入地獄受苦無量。

As the Saṃyuktaratnapiṭaka-sūtra states: In the past, there was a woman whose nature was stubborn and contrary, and who did not accord with propriety or standards. In whatever she said or did, she was constantly contrary to her mother-in-law. Later, she devised a scheme and instructed her husband to kill his own mother. Her husband was foolish and immediately followed his wife's words; he took his mother out into the open wilderness, bound her hands and feet, and was about to do her harm. The extremity of this rebellious crime touched high Heaven; clouds and mist gathered from all directions and brought down a thunderbolt, striking and killing the son. The mother then returned home. The wife, opening the door and thinking it was her husband, asked, saying, 'Did you kill her yet?' The mother-in-law replied, 'I have already killed [him].' Only when the next day arrived did [the wife] realize her husband had died. The crime of unfilial conduct receives visible retribution like this; later, one enters hell to undergo immeasurable suffering.
