Du Yuan of the Jin dynasty, courtesy name Yongping, was a native of Fucheng in Zitong. His family was exceedingly wealthy, and he had a son named Tianbao, whom Yuan dearly loved. When the boy was ten years old, in the third year of the Taiyuan era, he died of a sudden illness. After several months had passed, a sow kept by the family gave birth to five piglets, one of which was the fattest. Later, when a new official arrived, Yuan was going to use it as a gift and caught it to have it slaughtered. Suddenly a bhikṣu arrived before Yuan and said to him, “This piglet is your son! How could you have forgotten each other within merely a hundred-odd days?” Having spoken, he suddenly vanished. Looking around in search of him, [Yuan] saw him in the western sky, soaring through the air and departing. A fragrant aroma filled the air and did not subside until a full day had passed.
