It is like pressing oil: insects live in every single sesame seed, and when one uses an oil-pressing wheel to crush them, the oil is extracted. Day and night, how many sentient beings must this oil-presser certainly kill? If, furthermore, a person were to press oil with ten such wheels, each wheel pressing a thousand bushels of oil day and night, continuing like this for a full thousand years, how much sin would this oil-presser incur? The Bodhisattva Kṣitigarbha said: "Exceedingly much, World-Honoured One! None can know the measure of this person's sin; the Buddha alone knows its number and quantity." The Buddha said: "By analogy, the sin of ten wheels equals the sin of one brothel, a house having a thousand women who all pursue lust. Ten such brothels equal the sin of one tavern. Ten such taverns equal [the sin of] one slaughterhouse. The sin of ten such slaughterhouses equals [the sin of] one kṣatriya-caṇḍāla householder. In ten turns of the caṇḍāla, it equals the sin of a king's wheel for a single day and night." At that time, the World-Honoured One spoke a gāthā, saying:
