The *Zapiyu jing* states: A husband and wife went to a grape-wine vat intending to take some wine. The husband and wife saw each other's shadows and became jealous of one another, thinking someone was hiding in the vat. The two fought each other, not stopping until death [was near]. At that time, a practitioner broke the vat for them; when the wine was gone, there were no two persons at all. Realizing that they were shadows, they felt ashamed. The bhikṣu explained the essentials of the Dharma for them, and both husband and wife attained avaivartika. The Buddha used this as an analogy: those who fight upon seeing shadows are like the people of the three realms, who do not recognize that the five aggregates and four great elements are suffering and empty, having the three poisons in their bodies, so that birth and death never cease.
