十誦律云。佛在憍薩羅國。與大比丘僧安居。有兩老比丘。夏罷得多施物。自念人少物多。不敢分之。恐其得罪。跋難陀比丘知往與分。問二比丘言。汝得衣分未耶。答未分。二老比丘問言。汝能分不。答言。能。是中應作羯磨。即持衣物來置其前。跋難陀分作三聚。是二比丘間著一聚。自向二聚衣間立言。汝聽作羯磨。

The *Daśādhyāya-vinaya* states: When the Buddha was in the country of Kosala, he spent the summer retreat with the great bhikṣu-saṃgha. There were two old bhikṣus who, at the end of the summer retreat, obtained many donated goods. They thought to themselves that the people were few and the goods were many, and they did not dare divide them, fearing they would incur sin. The bhikṣu Upananda knew of this and went to divide them for them. He asked the two bhikṣus, saying: "Have you received your share of the robes yet?" They answered: "They have not been divided yet." The two old bhikṣus asked, saying: "Can you divide them?" He answered, saying: "I can. A karmavācanā should be performed for this." They immediately brought the robes and items and placed them before him. Upananda divided them into three piles. He placed one pile between the two bhikṣus, and stood facing the space between the two piles of robes himself, saying: "Listen to me perform the karmavācanā:
