“Now I give you this verse. If he becomes angry and complains that the food is bad, stand by his side with your back turned and softly recite it so that he can hear it.” Having given this instruction, he returned to his home country. After this slave saw his master off, whenever mealtime came, he was angry again as before. Beside her husband, the wife tested reciting the verse. Hearing this verse, the husband's mind was displeased, and he thought, “Alas! This old thing has exposed my foul secret!” From then on, he always spoke gentle words and pleaded with his wife not to be angry, fearing that his wife would tell others his secret affairs. The Buddha told the bhikṣus: “The former master, the brāhmaṇa Philohi at that time, was myself; the slave Kalaha at that time is now the bhikṣu Chanda. At that time, he already relied on me to bully others; now he is just the same, relying on my power to mistreat others.”
