爾時彼龜作如是念。此華鬘師妄言誑我。彼師母患著床。其姊採華造鬘。欲賣以用活命。今作是言。定是誑我。欲食我故誘我出耳。是時彼龜向華鬘師而說偈言。
At that time, the turtle thought: 'This garland-maker lies to deceive me. His mother is sick in bed, and his sister picks flowers to make garlands, wishing to sell them to make a living. Now he says this; it must be that he is deceiving me, wanting to eat me and therefore luring me out.' At that time, the turtle spoke a verse to the garland-maker:
