三依老子昇玄經云。天尊告道陵。使往東方詣受法教。昇玄又云。東方如來遣善勝大士。詣太上曰。如來聞子為張陵說法。故遣我來看。子語張曰。卿隨我往詣佛所。當令子得見所未見聞所未聞。陵即禮大士。隨往佛所聽法。

Third, according to the Laozi shengxuan jing (Laozi's Scripture of Ascension to the Mysterious), the Heavenly Worthy told Daoling to go to the east to receive the teachings of the Dharma. The Shengxuan jing also says: 'The Tathāgata of the East dispatched the Mahāsattva Śāntivikrāmin (Shansheng Dashi) to the Most High, saying: "The Tathāgata heard that you were expounding the Dharma for Zhang Ling, and therefore sent me to observe." [The Most High] spoke to Zhang, saying: "Follow me to the Buddha's place, and I shall cause you to see what you have never seen, and hear what you have never heard." Ling then bowed to the Mahāsattva and followed him to the Buddha's place to listen to the Dharma.'
