Also, the Avadāna-śataka states: The Buddha entered the city of Śrāvastī to beg for food. Arriving in an alley, he met a brāhmaṇa, who drew a line on the ground with his finger and would not allow the Buddha to pass. He said to the Buddha: "Give me back five hundred gold coins now, and only then will I let you pass. If you do not give them to me, I will never let you pass." The Buddha stood silently, unable to advance. When King Prasenajit and others heard that the Buddha was detained, each sent precious gems to the brāhmaṇa, but he refused to accept them. Hearing of this, Sudatta took five hundred gold coins and gave them to the brāhmaṇa, who then allowed the Buddha to pass. The monks asked the Buddha: "By what cause did this happen?" The Buddha said: "In the past, in the kingdom of Vārāṇasī, the crown prince of King Brahmadatta was named Kalyāṇamitra. While out wandering, he saw an actor playing dice with the chief minister's son, gambling five hundred gold coins. At that time, the minister's son lost money to the actor and was pressed for it, but did not repay. The prince said: 'If he does not give it to you, I will repay it on his behalf.' Yet in the end, it was not repaid. From then on, for immeasurable lifetimes, that actor has constantly sought money from me." The Buddha said: "The prince of that time is now myself; the minister's son is now Sudatta; and the actor of that time is now this brāhmaṇa."
