57.13

又毘婆沙論云。曾聞有一女人為餓鬼所持。即以呪術而問鬼言。何以惱他女人。鬼答之言。此女人者是我怨家。五百世中而常殺我。我亦五百世中斷其命根。若彼能捨舊怨之心。我亦能捨。爾時女人作如是言。我今已捨怨心。鬼觀女人雖口言捨而心不放。即斷其命。

Also, the Mahāvibhāṣā-śāstra states: It is heard that there was once a woman possessed by a hungry ghost. Using spells, [someone] questioned the ghost: "Why do you torment another woman?" The ghost answered: "This woman is my enemy; for five hundred lifetimes she constantly killed me, and for five hundred lifetimes I also cut short her life-faculty. If she can abandon her heart of ancient grudge, I too can abandon it." At that time, the woman said: "I have now abandoned my grudgeful mind." The ghost observed the woman: though her mouth spoke of abandoning it, her mind did not let it go; thereupon, the ghost severed her life.
