As a sūtra states: There are meritorious nāgas whose dependent retribution is fully replete with joy. Wives, concubines, singing-girls, clothing, food and drink, elephants, horses, and the seven treasures—there are none that they do not possess. Their ease, joy, and sovereignty surpass those of humans. Even among the six heavens of desire there are birds and beasts that freely experience pleasure. There are also nāgas of meager merit whose bodies are scorched daily by hot sand and nibbled and eaten by small worms. Furthermore, as with the animals in the human realm, they are driven, whipped, forced to bear light and heavy loads, and run ragged without freedom. Furthermore, those traveling on water, on land, or in the air lack water and grass and butcher one another. Moreover, between the Iron Encompassing Mountains, the animals of the two realms perpetually dwell in darkness, enduring uninterrupted suffering without a moment's joy. Such sufferings cannot be fully recounted.
