As the *Mahāvibhāṣā* says: Among ghosts, the comely ones are those of mighty virtue; their appearance is upright and handsome, no different from the devas. Furthermore, all the spirits of the Five Sacred Peaks, the Four Great Rivers, mountains, and seas are mostly handsome and upright, and are termed 'comely'. The second are the ugly ones, which refers to ghosts without mighty virtue; their appearance is wretched and vile beyond full description: their bodies are like the carcass of a starved dog, their hair like wild tangled tumbleweed, their throats like tiny needles, their legs like rotten withered wood, their mouths constantly drooling saliva, their noses constantly running with snot, pus growing inside their ears, and blood flowing from their eyes. All such as these are called 'greatly ugly'.
