According to the Karmavibhaṅga Sūtra, fully committing ten kinds of karma results in retribution as an animal: first, bodily evil action; second, verbal evil action; third, mental evil action; fourth, giving rise to various evil karmas from the affliction of greed; fifth, giving rise to various evil karmas from the affliction of anger; sixth, giving rise to various evil karmas from the affliction of delusion; seventh, slandering and reviling sentient beings; eighth, afflicting and harming sentient beings; ninth, giving impure things; and tenth, practicing sexual misconduct. According to the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna Sūtra, the varieties of animals are each distinct, and the retributions obtained from their karmic causes are also each different; this is fully detailed in the sūtra and cannot be completely recounted. According to the Bodhisattvabhūmi, fully committing the ten evils can, one by one, cause sentient beings to fall into the hells, the animal realm, or among hungry ghosts; upon later obtaining a human body, they still suffer habitual retribution (as fully stated in other chapters).
