60.43

若有男子女人。聞是經呪。受持書寫讀誦解說。即超越無量阿僧祇劫生死之罪。消伏毒害不與禍對。乃至具足善根生淨佛國。案西域傳。南海之濱有山寺。觀世音菩薩常止其中。隨有念者隨應如響無不感赴。若至山寺斷食七日。即見聖者親為說法。良以斷食心猛故使感見通明。如上行法斷食亦爾。

"If there are men or women who hear this sūtra and dhāraṇī, uphold, copy, recite, and explain it, they will immediately transcend the sins of birth and death spanning immeasurable asaṃkhyeya kalpas, subduing poison and harm, never encountering disasters or adversaries, and moreover perfecting their wholesome roots and being born in a pure buddha-land." According to the Account of the Western Regions, on the shore of the Southern Sea there is a mountain monastery in which the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara constantly abides. Wherever there is someone who is mindful of him, he responds according to need like an echo, never failing to arrive sympathetically. If one arrives at the mountain monastery and fasts for seven days, one will immediately behold the holy one in person preaching the Dharma for them. It is truly because through fasting the mind is fervent that it causes one to sympathetically perceive him with penetrative clarity. Fasting in the ritual practices above is also like this.
