In the eastern countryside of Ying County in Kuaiji during the Han, there was a young woman whose surname was Wu and courtesy name Wangzi. She was sixteen years old, and her appearance was lovely. In her village there was someone skilled in drum-dance divination who invited her, so she went. Walking along a dike, halfway there she suddenly saw an extraordinary nobleman riding in a boat, with more than ten attendants, all neat and orderly. He ordered someone to ask Wangzi, 'Where do you wish to go now?' She answered fully with the facts. The nobleman said, 'I am just now heading there myself; you may come aboard the boat and go together.' Wangzi declined, not daring to do so. Suddenly he disappeared. When Wangzi arrived and knelt in reverence before the spirit seat, she saw that the nobleman who had just been in the boat was sitting upright with solemn dignity: it was the statue of Lord Jiang. He asked Wangzi, 'Why have you come so late?' and thereupon threw two oranges to her. He repeatedly manifested his form and eventually bestowed his affections upon her. Whatever Wangzi desired in her heart would immediately descend from midair. Once she longed to eat minced fish, and a pair of fresh carp arrived according to her wish. Wangzi's fragrant scent wafted for several miles, and there were considerable numinous proofs; the entire township served her together. After three years had passed, Wangzi suddenly developed external interests, and their intercourse was immediately severed (this one verification is from the Xu soushen ji).
