Xiahou Xuan of the Jin, whose courtesy name was Taichu, was also a man of talent and renown at that time. King Jing of Sima [Sima Shi] was jealous of him and had him killed. Xuan's kinsmen set out sacrifices for him, and they saw Xuan arrive at the spirit-seat, remove his head and set it beside him, take all the fruit, food, wine, and meat, and place them inside his neck. When finished, he replaced it himself and said, 'I have obtained a hearing before the Lord on High! Sima Ziyuan will have no heir.' Soon thereafter King Jing died, indeed leaving no son. His younger brother King Wen [Sima Zhao] enfeoffed his second son as King of Qi to succeed King Jing. When You died, his nephew Gu succeeded to the throne, but he was also killed. When the turmoil of the Yongjia era came, a spirit-medium saw a younger brother [of the clan] who said, 'The downfall of our house is precisely because the two men, Cao Shuang and Xiahou Xuan, were able to lodge their complaints and their grievances were able to be redressed' (from the Yuanhun zhi).
