Now the Great Teaching is impartial, and utmost virtue evokes uniform resonance; yet ordinary inclinations are alienated by external conditions, and creation shapes disparate forms. Mind and realm act upon one another; karmic retributions of suffering and pleasure differ. Like wax pressed into clay, once the seal is made, the impression appears; its signs can be divined. Thus human and animal are distinguished in their cries; barbarian and Chinese are differentiated in countenance; the noble and base have the distinction of darkness and light; the sage and ordinary have the difference of purity and turbidity.
