夫人根元　流浪生死　漂滯馳騁
墮於五趣　彼終生此　皆有因緣
人根相貌　今為汝說　行步顛蹷
不自覺知　視瞻眩惑　常喜多忘
舉動輕飄　浮游曠野　此人乃從
活地獄來　支節煩痛　睡眠驚覺
夢寤凶惡　黑繩獄來　麁髮戾眼
長齒喜瞋　聲濁暴疾　合會獄來
語聲高大　不知慚愧　喜聞喚呼
不別真偽　眠臥呻吟　夢數驚喚
當知此人　啼哭獄來　常喜悲泣
登高遠望　好鬪家人　無有親疎
言便致恚　經宿不食　此人本從
大啼哭來　身大脚細　筋力薄尠
言語噎塞　聲如破甕　神識不定
心無孝順　當知此人　阿鼻獄來
身體麁醜　長苦寒戰　好熱喜渴
慳貪嫉妬　見人施惠　自致煩惱
此人乃從　熱地獄來　見火驚恐
復喜暖熱　行步輕便　不避時宜
所作尋悔　復欲更施　此人復從
大熱獄來　小眼喜瞋　所受多妄
所造短狹　無廣大心　見大而懼
視小歡喜　此人乃從　優鉢獄來
赤眼醜形　常喜鬪訟　誹謗賢聖
諸得道者　晝夜伺人　非法之行
當知此人　鉢頭獄來　眼視三角
不孝二親　生便短命　拘牟獄來
好帶刀劍　強撩人鬪　必為人殺
邠持獄來　身生瘡痍　口氣臭處
與人無親　曠地獄來　形體長大
行步劣弱　少髮薄皮　常多病痛
見人則瞋　貪餮無厭　當知此人
從焰獄來　體白眼青　語便流沫
言無端緒　好弄塵土　見深淤泥
身臥其上　此人乃從　灰地獄來
卷頭黃目　人所惡見　臨事惶悑
劍樹獄來　手常執刀　聞鬪便喜
為刃所害　從刀獄來　體黑咽塞
喜止冥室　口出惡言　熱灰獄來
薄力少氣　不得自在　得失之宜
一不由己　設見屠殺　不離其側
當知此人　從剝獄來　瞋喜無常
尋知變悔　時能辭謝　不經日夜
懇責其心　如被刑罰　此人乃從
毱地獄來　喜宿臭處　好食麁弊
所著醜陋　從屎獄來　顏色醜惡
口氣麁獷　好讒鬪人　善香獄來
當觀此懇　所從來處　知之遠離
如避劫燒　地獄之相　略說如是

The original root of man / Wanders in birth and death, / Drifting, detained, and racing along, / Falling into the five destinies. / That one dies there and is born here, / All has causes and conditions. / The appearances of human faculties, / I shall now explain for you. / Walking with stumbling steps, / Unaware of it oneself; / Vision blurred and bewildered, / Frequently prone to forgetfulness; / Actions light and fluttering, / Roaming in the wilderness: / This person has come / From the Reviving Hell. / Limbs and joints aching with vexation, / Startling awake from sleep, / Dreaming evil nightmares: / One who comes from the Black Rope Hell. / Coarse hair and perverse eyes, / Long teeth and fond of anger, / Turbid voice and violent haste: / One who comes from the Crushing Hell. / Loud voice in speech, / Knowing no shame or remorse, / Fond of hearing shouts and calls, / Not distinguishing the true from false, / Groaning while lying down to sleep, / Frequently startling and crying out in dreams: / One should know this person / Has come from the Crying Hell. / Always fond of weeping in grief, / Climbing heights to gaze afar, / Fond of quarreling with family, / Knowing neither kin nor stranger, / Speaking with instant wrath, / Going a night without eating: / This person originally comes / From the Great Crying Hell. / Large body and slender legs, / Sinews and strength feeble and scanty, / Choked and obstructed in speech, / Voice like a broken jar, / Consciousness unstable, / Mind lacking in filial piety: / One should know this person / Has come from the Avīci Hell. / Body coarse and ugly, / Long suffering from cold shivers, / Fond of heat and frequently thirsty, / Stingy, greedy, and jealous; / Seeing others give charitably, / Personally bringing on vexation: / This person has come / From the Hot Hell. / Startled and fearful at the sight of fire, / Yet fond of warmth and heat, / Walking lightly and swiftly, / Disregarding what is timely and fit; / Soon regretting whatever is done, / Yet wishing to give again: / This person again comes / From the Great Hot Hell. / Small eyes and fond of anger, / What is received is mostly false; / What is created is narrow and meager, / Lacking a vast mind; / Fearing when seeing the large, / Rejoicing at the sight of the small: / This person has come / From the Utpala Hell. / Red eyes and ugly form, / Always fond of lawsuits and fighting, / Slandering the worthy and holy / And those who have attained the Way; / Day and night spying on others' / Improper conduct: / One should know this person / Has come from the Padma Hell. / Triangular eyes when looking, / Unfilial to both parents, / Short-lived from birth: / One who comes from the Kumuda Hell. / Fond of wearing knives and swords, / Willfully provoking others to fight, / Certain to be killed by someone: / One who comes from the Bindu Hell. / Body erupting in sores and wounds, / Foul odor from the mouth, / Having no intimacy with others: / One who comes from the Wilderness Hell. / Tall and large in bodily form, / Walking steps weak and feeble, / Scanty hair and thin skin, / Constantly suffering many ailments; / Angry upon seeing people, / Gluttonous without satiety: / One should know this person / Has come from the Flame Hell. / White body and blue eyes, / Drooling saliva whenever speaking; / Words without coherence, / Fond of playing with dust and soil; / Seeing deep mire and mud, / Lying down upon it: / This person has come / From the Ash Hell. / Curly hair and yellow eyes, / Hated by people on sight; / Panicking when facing tasks: / One who comes from the Sword-Tree Hell. / Hands always grasping a blade, / Rejoicing upon hearing of a fight; / Meeting harm from weapons: / One who comes from the Knife Hell. / Dark body and constricted throat, / Fond of dwelling in dark rooms, / Uttering evil words from the mouth: / One who comes from the Hot Ash Hell. / Feeble strength and short of breath, / Unable to attain autonomy; / What is suitable to gain or lose / Is not up to oneself at all; / If seeing slaughter, / Not departing from its side: / One should know this person / Has come from the Flaying Hell. / Anger and joy without constancy, / Soon recognizing error and repenting; / Able at times to decline and apologize, / Before a day or night has passed / Earnestly rebuking one's own heart / As if suffering punishment: / This person has come / From the Ball Hell. / Fond of lodging in foul places, / Fond of eating coarse food; / What is worn is unsightly: / One who comes from the Excrement Hell. / Complexion hideous and evil, / Breath coarse and rough, / Fond of slandering and causing discord: / One who comes from the Good Fragrance Hell. / One should observe these earnest marks / And where they have come from; / Knowing them, stay far away, / As if fleeing the conflagration at the end of a kalpa. / The signs of the hells / Are briefly spoken like this.
