Depending on Mount Sumeru,
there are five classes of gods; the conditions they originally generated
make their bodily marks dissimilar.
With a slender waist and thick legs, constantly fond of harboring a smile—
the wise should observe this:
[such a one] has come from the Crooked Devas.
His intention fond of the subtle and wondrous,
yet having little wealth and property; seeing combat, he is afraid:
[such a one] has come from the Śī-Devas.
Tall in stature and white in body, his facial appearance upright and correct, having no liking for the light of fire:
[such a one] has come from the Po-Devas.
Constantly harboring joy and delight, hearing of evil he is not flustered,
not receiving it from the other:
[such a one] has come from the Devas of Joy.
Reflecting and enduring suffering,
fond of distinguishing meanings, compassionate and filial toward father and mother:
[such a one] has come from the Vaiśravaṇa Devas.
From past lives not enjoying domestic life, fond of wandering in groves and thickets, his intention mindful of female beauty:
[such a one] has come from the Three Devas.
Though possessing little wealth and treasure,
and born into a humble and lowly family, his mind delights in purity:
[such a one] has come from the Three Devas.
Following his own inclinations in conduct,
what he undertakes is never achieved; his hopes severed, his wishes thwarted:
[such a one] has come from the Yāma Devas.
His mind delights in illicit sex with others, not keeping to his own wife, being employed by ghosts:
[such a one] has come from the Paranirmitavaśavartin Devas.
Serving and attending to father and mother, constantly modeling himself on righteousness,
bearing the faults of others upon himself:
[such a one] has come from the Tuṣita Devas.
Seeking the Path through what is not the Path,
his mind free from thoughts of stinginess, taking no pleasure in staying at home:
[such a one] has come from the Brahmā Devas.
His inclinations and nature dull,
constantly coveting sleep, and not understanding the Dharma:
[such a one] has come from the Asaññasatta Devas.
The sentient beings of the six destinies
each have an unoriginated root;
their natures and practices are not the same, and their aspirations and conduct are distinct.
