周禮春宗官伯日禮司命。風伯雨師星也。風師箕星也。雨師畢星也。玄謂司中司命文昌第四第五星也。案抱朴子曰。河伯者。華陰人。以八月上庚日渡河溺死。天帝署為河伯。又五行書曰。河伯以庚辰日死。不可治船遠行。溺沒不返。

The *Rites of Zhou* states: “The Director of the Clan Court under the Spring Offices performs ceremonies to the Director of Fate.” The Wind Earl and the Master of Rain are stars: the Master of Wind is the Winnowing Basket constellation; the Master of Rain is the Net constellation. Zheng Xuan says that the Director of the Center and the Director of Fate are the fourth and fifth stars of the Wenchang constellation. Examining the *Baopuzi*, it says: “The River Earl was a man of Huayin. On the first *geng* day of the eighth month, he drowned while crossing the river, and the Heavenly Thearch appointed him as the River Earl.” Furthermore, the *Book of the Five Phases* states: “The River Earl died on a *gengchen* day; on this day, one must not repair boats or travel far, lest one drown and never return.”
