In the fifth year of the Jianzhao era of the Han, Hao Shang, the Inspector of Yanzhou, prohibited the people from privately establishing altars of the soil. At the altar of the soil in Tuoxiang of Shanyang, there was a great scholar tree. Officials chopped and severed it, but that night the tree stood up again in its original place. A commentary states: "In general, when that which was severed and withered rises again, it is an omen of that which was abolished rising once more." This was an omen of the Restoration by Emperor Shizu.
