問曰。云何名遠離偷盜者。答曰。偷盜有九種。一他護。二彼想。三疑心。四知不隨他。五欲奪。六知他物起我心。七作。八不作相。九無作相。是等名為偷盜身業。

Question: What is meant by 'abstaining from stealing'? Answer: Stealing has nine factors: first, protected by another; second, the perception of that; third, doubtful mind; fourth, knowing it does not belong to oneself; fifth, desiring to seize; sixth, knowing it is another's property and giving rise to the thought of 'mine'; seventh, active performance; eighth, characteristic of non-action; ninth, characteristic of unmanifest karma. These are named the bodily karma of stealing.
