69.60

四謂父母兄弟室家親族。朋友知識。恩愛榮樂。財物富貴。官爵俸祿。騎乘游觀。妻妾子息。以自驕恣。飲食快意。兒客僕使。趨行綺視。顧影而步。輕蔑眾人。計己無雙。奴客庸罵。獸類畜生。出入自在。無有期度。不察前後。謂其眷屬。從使之眾。意可常得。宿對卒至。如湯消雪。心乃懷懼。請求濟患。安得如願。呼噏命斷。魂神獨逝。父母兄弟。妻子親族。朋友知識。恩愛眷屬。皆自獨留。官爵財物。僕從各散。馳走如星。欲求不死。終不可得也。

Fourth: with parents, siblings, household, relatives, friends, and acquaintances, cherished affection, glory, and pleasure, wealth, riches, honor, official rank, and emoluments, riding horses and sightseeing, wives, concubines, sons, and daughters, thereby indulging oneself in arrogance; eating and drinking to one's heart's content, with boys, guests, and servants hurrying about, casting alluring glances, admiring one's shadow as one walks, despising the multitude, considering oneself without equal, abusing slaves and hirelings, treating them like beasts and domestic animals, coming and going freely without limit or measure, never reflecting on what went before or what will come after, believing that one's retinue and servants can be kept forever—yet when past retribution suddenly arrives, like hot water melting snow, one's heart is seized with fear, begging and seeking for relief from the disaster, but how could one get one's wish? With an inhalation and exhalation life is severed, and the spirit departs alone; parents, siblings, wives, children, relatives, friends, acquaintances, and beloved retinue all stay behind on their own; official ranks, wealth, and servants scatter, fleeing like shooting stars: wishing to seek not to die is utterly unattainable."
