爾時閻摩王。第三呵之語言。汝愚癡人。汝昔作人時。豈可不見第三天使世間出耶。答言。大天。我實不見。王復告言。汝人間時。豈不復見。若婦人身。若丈夫身。隨時命終置於床上以雜色衣而蒙覆之。將出聚落。昇帳軒蓋種種莊嚴。眷屬圍繞舉手散髮。灰土坌頭極大悲惱。號咷哭泣舉聲大叫。椎胸哀慟酸哽楚切。汝悉見不。答言。大天。我實見之。時王告言。癡人汝昔既見如此。何不思惟。我亦有死未得免離。今宜作善為我長夜得大利益。彼人答言。大天。我實不作如是思惟何以故。以放逸故。時王告言。汝既放逸。不作善業自造此惡。非他人造得此果報。汝還自受。以此三使教示呵責已。勅令將去。時守獄者。即執罪人兩足兩臂。以頭向下以足向上。遙擲置於諸地獄中。

"Then King Yama rebukes him a third time, saying to him: 'You foolish person! When you were formerly a human, how could you not have seen the third divine messenger appear in the world?' He replies: 'Great Deva, I truly did not see it.' The king addresses him again: 'When you were in the human realm, did you not see, whether the body of a woman or the body of a man, upon dying at their appointed time, placed upon a bed and covered with multicolored clothing, carried out of the village, mounted on curtains and canopies with various adornments, surrounded by relatives raising their hands and disheveling their hair, scattering ashes and dirt upon their heads in extreme grief and distress, wailing, weeping, and shouting loudly, beating their breasts in lamentation, choked with grief and pain? Did you see all this or not?' He replies: 'Great Deva, I truly saw it.' Then the king addresses him: 'Foolish person, formerly having seen such things, why did you not reflect: "I too have death and have not yet escaped it. Now I ought to do good so that I may attain great benefit through the long night"?' That person replies: 'Great Deva, I truly did not reflect in this way. Why? Because of heedlessness.' Then the king addresses him: 'Since you were heedless and did not perform wholesome karma, you created this evil yourself. It was not created by others that you receive this fruit of retribution; you yourself must receive it.' Having instructed and rebuked him with these three messengers, he commands that he be taken away. Then the hell-wardens seize the sinner's two feet and two arms, with head downward and feet upward, and hurl him from afar into the various hells."
