Moreover, the Daśabhūmikavibhāṣā-śāstra says: 'The Buddha told Kāśyapa: "There are four kinds of precept-breaking monks who resemble those who uphold precepts. What are the four? First, there is a monk who can completely perform all the practices in the precept scripture, yet says that there is a self; this is called breaking precepts while resembling one who upholds precepts. Second, there is a monk who recites and upholds the sūtras and vinaya, guarding his precept conduct, but remains unmoved and unseparated from the view of individuality; this is called breaking precepts while resembling one who upholds precepts. Third, there is a monk who fully practices the twelve dhūtas, yet views dharmas as definitely existent; this is called breaking precepts while resembling one who upholds precepts. Fourth, there is a monk who practices a mind of loving-kindness toward sentient beings, but upon hearing the non-arising mark of all conditioned phenomena, his mind becomes terrified; this is called breaking precepts while resembling one who upholds precepts."' With this passage as proof, we therefore know: although a foolish person relies on precept conduct and has no bodily or vocal faults, falsely clinging contrary to principle, in his mind there are no precepts of the path. If one can contemplate and see that form and mind are non-self, only with this pure wisdom are there precepts of the path. Precept conduct being so, giving and the rest are also like this.
