In the Tang dynasty, Dou Gui, the Area Commander of Luozhou and Duke of Cuan, had a nature that delighted in slaughter. Initially, when serving as Vice Director of the Branch Department of State Affairs of Yizhou, he killed many generals and soldiers, and he also murdered Wei Yunqi, Minister of the Branch Department of State Affairs. In the winter of the second year of the Zhenguan era, he fell critically ill in Luozhou. Suddenly he said of his own accord: 'Someone has presented me with melons.' His attendants reported: 'It is the winter season, there are no melons.' The Duke said: 'A plate of fine melons—how can there be none?' Soon after, he looked with alarm and said: 'They are not melons; they are all human heads seeking my life!' He further said: 'Support me so I can stand up and see Minister Wei.' As soon as he finished speaking, he died.
