In the Tang dynasty, Feng Yuanze was a native of Changhe in Bohai. By the Xianqing era, he served as Chief of Provisions in the Court of Imperial Entertainments. At that time, a Western foreign guest, the King of Khotan, came to court. The surplus sheep from his food provisions amounted to several dozens or hundreds of head. The King entrusted them all to Yuanze to send to Buddhist monasteries to be released for longevity. Yuanze, however, secretly ordered butchers to slaughter them and kept the proceeds. In the summer, the sixth month of the first year of the Longshuo era, Luoyang had heavy rain, and a thunderbolt struck Yuanze, killing him in the middle of the great avenue outside the Xuanren Gate. His neck was snapped and severed, his blood spattered on the ground. The spectators who filled the street were all struck with terror. (These five records of resonance are from the Supplement to the Records of Miraculous Retribution [Mingbao shiyi lu].)
