How lamentable that the deluded multitude has heavy obstructions: they discard the three carts and do not drive them, drift and sink in the ocean of suffering, and submit to scorching and burning without wearying! They are like bluebottle flies delighting in a rotting corpse, or moths throwing themselves into a mass of fire. Truly, because they have been submerged in delusion for many kalpas, they have undergone hardship and tribulation in full, enduring manifold sufferings down to the burning and boiling of today. Therefore the Tathāgata, in his great compassion, could not bear to abandon them forever; he revealed suffering and bliss to make them feel aversion and delight. Therefore, in this chapter the two courses of offenses and blessings among the ten unwholesome deeds are briefly clarified.
