Zhang Gao, Regional Inspector of Eastern Xuzhou under the Liang, was the grandson of Vice Director of the Imperial Secretariat Zhang Yong. He had once been defeated and fled north. There was a local man who swore an oath with Gao and escorted him back to the south. Later, that man went forth as a monk and took the name Sengyue, and Gao made offerings to him. When Gao was stationed in Eastern Xuzhou, Sengyue followed him to his posting as well. Relying on his past merit and long-standing acquaintance, he quite often offended Gao with his words. Gao became furious and dispatched two retainers—one surnamed Jing and the other surnamed Bai, neither of whose given names are preserved—who went in the night and murdered him. Thereafter, night after night [Gao] dreamed that he saw Sengyue saying he would take revenge. A few days later, Gao went out to shoot [arrows]; the copper nock of an arrow nicked his finger, barely drawing blood, so he thought nothing of it. Later, while peeling a pear, the pear juice soaked into the wound, which then began to fester and rot. After ten days or so, another sore broke out on his shoulder for no reason, its pus and blood connecting through to the finger. In a little over a month, he died.
