The Buddha addressed the Devaputra Kanakavatsa: "Whenever a bodhisattva bound to one last birth dwells in the mother's womb, only if that mother is fully endowed with thirty-two marks can she bear the bodhisattva dwelling in her womb. What are the thirty-two matters? First, that mother is born through correct virtue. Second, that mother is complete in limbs and torso. Third, that mother is flawless in virtuous conduct. Fourth, that mother was born in an appropriate place. Fifth, that mother's conduct is worthy. Sixth, that mother's lineage is pure. Seventh, that mother is incomparably upright and beautiful. Eighth, that mother's name is fittingly acclaimed. Ninth, that mother's body and appearance are proportioned from top to bottom. Tenth, that mother has never before given birth. Eleventh, that mother possesses great merit. Twelfth, that mother constantly contemplates joyful things. Thirteenth, that mother's mind constantly complies with all good things. Fourteenth, that mother has no perverted mind. Fifteenth, that mother's body, speech, and mind are naturally subdued. Sixteenth, that mother is fearless in mind and speech. Seventeenth, that mother is learned and possesses retention. Eighteenth, that mother is extraordinarily skilled in women's crafts. Nineteenth, that mother's mind is without crookedness. Twentieth, that mother's mind is without deceit. Twenty-first, that mother's mind is without anger. Twenty-second, that mother's mind is without jealousy. Twenty-third, that mother's mind is without stinginess. Twenty-fourth, that mother's mind is not impetuous. Twenty-fifth, that mother's mind cannot easily be diverted. Twenty-sixth, that mother's body bears the marks of supreme virtue. Twenty-seventh, that mother's mind is capable of harboring patience. Twenty-eighth, that mother's mind possesses shame and conscience. Twenty-ninth, that mother has attenuated lust, anger, and delusion. Thirtieth, that mother's conduct has none of the faults of women. Thirty-first, that mother practices filial devotion toward her husband. Thirty-second, that mother gives rise to all virtues and is fully endowed with all practices. Only such a mother can bear a bodhisattva bound to one last birth in his final existence. When he is about to enter the mother's womb, he chooses the day of the constellation Puṣya, and only then enters into the mother's womb. Prior to her receiving in her womb the bodhisattva bound to one last birth, that mother must receive the eightfold fast; only thereafter does the bodhisattva enter that womb." Bodhisattva Prabhāpāla further spoke these words: "I do not receive existence for the sake of all the worldly wealth and pleasures of the five desires, and so descend into the human realm to receive this one birth; it is solely to bring peace and happiness to all sentient beings, and out of pity for all afflicted sentient beings."
