Fifth, the contrast between defiled and pure: As the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra states: "In the Buddha's Dharma, there are four kinds of giving: 1. The giver is pure, but the recipient is impure. 2. The giver is impure, but the recipient is pure. 3. Both the giver and recipient are pure. 4. Both the giver and recipient are impure." When a Buddha himself makes offerings to a Buddha, this is 'both are pure.' For example, the flowers produced by the power of merit of Ratnasaṃbhava Buddha of the East were entrusted to Bodhisattva Samantaprabha of the Dharmakāya of the Ten Abodes, who brought these flowers and scattered them as an offering over Śākyamuni Buddha, knowing that the Buddhas of the ten directions are the supreme field of merit. This is 'both are pure.' (The remaining clauses can be understood [accordingly]).
