Furthermore, if one who has left household life can contemplate suffering, emptiness, impermanence, and non-self, abhorring saṃsāra and aspiring to transcend the world, this is to follow the inner. If one goes against this practice, one turns instead into an outer worldly person. As for householders, if they can cast aside worldly sentiments, aspire toward high ideals, single-mindedly revere the Three Jewels, cultivate the four virtues, and practice filial piety, fraternal respect, benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, chastity, harmony, love, and respect—if they can carry out these practices, they turn instead to be aligned with the inner. If they violate these principles, they are no different from non-Buddhists. If worldly people can follow the inner teaching, they will awaken to true principle, their minds will constantly accord with the Way, and they will gradually advance along the superior path until reaching bodhi. Since this is known, if one wishes to engage in this practice, one must only humble oneself and accord virtue to others—like a dust cloth gathering filth to itself and offering cleanliness to others. Therefore a sūtra says: 'Attaining through yielding is the Buddha Path.'
