83.29

時德樂止聽聞其說。即得不起法忍。解諸法本逮陀隣尼。佛告阿難。爾時精進辯者。今我身是。德樂止者。彌勒是也。我於爾時俱與彌勒共聽經法。彌勒爾時睡眠獨無所得。我不行善權而救度者。彌勒至今在生死中未得度脫。

When Guṇaratikṣānti heard this spoken, he immediately attained the endurance of the non-arising of dharmas, understood the foundation of all dharmas, and attained the dhāraṇī. The Buddha told Ānanda, "At that time, Vīryapratibhāna was my own person; Guṇaratikṣānti was Maitreya. At that time, I listened to the scriptures and Dharma together with Maitreya. Maitreya slept at that time and alone attained nothing. If I had not employed skillful means to rescue and deliver him, Maitreya would still remain in birth and death today, not yet having attained deliverance."
